Sue Stone

Profile

Sue Stone’s work merges disparate images from the past with those from the present to create a partial narrative for the viewer to complete. Built in layers, the mixed media compositions contrast the slow building of an image in hand stitch with the spontaneity of machine stitch and paint.

Sue Stone is a UK based textile artist who studied Fashion at St Martins School of Art and then Embroidery at Goldsmiths College in London. Her work is mainly figurative, often regionalist, and usually has a partial narrative. Her inspiration, drawn from subjects both past and present, always has some connection to her own life and environment. She enjoys making analogies, compositions which connect time, place and circumstance. Disparate images combine and connect the past with the present and often allude to the passing of time.

She spent 26 years as a clothing designer and her affinity with cloth which can be seen in the richly textured clothing of her subjects. Using a deliberately limited colour palette recent work explores texture and pattern through simple use of hand stitching. Her work is underpinned by a great belief in drawing – as a thought process, as a means of solving problems, and as a means of expression in its own right.
