Profile

Sumi Perera’s artist books are an amalgam of influences of her work in the East and West as a doctor, scientist and artist. She exhibits internationally and is the recipient of several international awards and has work held in many public collections, including the Tate and Victoria & Albert Museum.

Sumi Perera’s artist books (Super Press) are an amalgam of influences of her work in the East (Sri Lanka, her native country), and the West (the United Kingdom, her adoptive country) as a doctor, scientist and artist. The process and evolution of the book is as important as the finished product and contain selected elements of each publication to form the next in the series to create variations on the theme. Often the final editorial control is handed to the reader to re-arrange the sequence of pages, to add or subtract from the content of the book, to create unique multiples.

Traditional and digital printmaking methods are combined with stitch, hand and laser cut techniques on paper, fabric, leather, glass, ceramic, metal, wood etc. Perera exhibits internationally and has work held in the Tate Britain; Victoria & Albert Museum, London; British Library; several British university artist book collections; Ashmolean Museum, Oxford; Yale Centre for British Art, USA; printROOM at Rotterdam; Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery; Grafisk Vaerksted-Naestaved, Denmark; Guanlan Museum in China; the Sakima Art Museum, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan; Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Permanent Art Collection, Alexandria, Egypt; and the Southern Cross University Artist Book Collection, New South Wales, Australia.
